SUMMARY:Towards a raw materials transition - Perspectives from the Global South\, 14th of October 2020
DESCRIPTION:Workshop: Towards a raw materials transition – Perspectives from the Global South \n14. October 2020\, 4 pm – 6 pm (digital) \n(german version below) \nThe raw materials used for consumption\, infrastructure and technological innovations are for the most part mined and extracted in the Global South. People and the environment in most cases pay a high price. The various human rights and environmental problems which are directly related to mining-production-consumption of metallic raw materials cannot be solved with more efficiency or new technologies alone. As a German civil society network\, AK Rohstoffe is calling for a raw materials transition. Global North countries are major consumers of raw materials and therefore have a special responsibility to reduce their raw material demand in absolute terms and implement human rights due diligence in international supply chains. AK Rohstoffe wants to critically discuss its concept of a raw materials transition and gain insights into diverse perspectives from experts from the Global South. In many places in our world\, people resist this exploitation and demonstrate their ideas of sustainable livelihoods. \nHow do the people in the mining countries see their future and what do they expect from us? \nWith:  \n– Pia Marchegiani (Farn\, Argentina)\, Director for Environmental Policy at the Fundacion Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (FARN) in Argentina. She works with civil society organizations and indigenous communities. \n– Jacques Nzumbu Mwanga (CARF\, DR Kongo)\, member of the Arrupe Centre for Research and Training (CARF) in the DRC. His research areas are governance and responsible value chains for cobalt\, strategic minerals and energy transition; artisanal mining certification\, traceability and support for cooperatives; and Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility. \n– Andrés Ángel (AIDA\, Colombia)\, is scientific advisor to the Freshwater Preservation Program. Andrés has experiences as a researcher in diverse socioecological conflicts and territorial defense processes\, primarily those related to neo-extractivism. \n  \nRegistration: \nTo participate\, please send a short registration by e-mail with your name to nicole.baerthlein@power-shift.de. Oktober 2020\, 16-18:00 Uhr (in englischer Sprache & digital) \nDie Rohstoffe\, die in den Konsumgesellschaften des Globalen Nordens verbraucht werden\, werden zum allergrößten Teil im Globalen Süden geschürft und abgebaut. Menschen und Umwelt zahlen dabei zumeist einen hohen Preis. Abbau-Nutzung-Verbrauch von metallischen Rohstoffen stehen in direkter Verbindung mit vielfältigen Menschenrechts- und Umweltproblemen. Allein mit mehr Effizienz oder neuen Technologien sind diese Probleme nicht lösbar. Die Länder des Globalen Nordens konsumieren am meisten Rohstoffe. Sie haben deshalb eine besondere Verantwortung ihre Nachfrage nach Rohstoffen in absoluten Zahlen zu verringern sowie mit Sorgfalt die Menschenrechte in den internationalen Lieferketten zu achten. Der AK Rohstoffe möchte sein Konzept der Rohstoffwende kritisch diskutieren und Einblicke in die diversen Perspektiven von Expert*innen aus Argentinien\, DR Kongo und Kolumbien gewinnen. An vielen Orten unserer Welt wehren sich die Menschen gegen diese Ausbeutung und verdeutlichen ihre Vorstellungen von zukunftsfähigem Leben. \nWie sehen die Menschen in den Abbauländern ihre Zukunft und was erwarten sie von uns? \nMit:  \n– Pia Marchegiani (Farn\, Argentinien)\, Direktorin für Umwelt Politik bei der “Fundacion Ambiente y Recursos Naturales” (FARN) in Argentinien. Seine Forschungsbereiche sind Governance und verantwortungsvolle Lieferketten für Kobalt\, Strategische Mineralien- und Energiewende\, Kleinbergbau Zertifikation\, Rückverfolgbarkeit und Unterstützung für Kooperativen sowie Corperate Social Environmental Responsibility. \n– Andrés Ángel (AIDA\, Kolumbien)\, wissenschaftlicher Berater für das “Freshwater Preservation Program”.
