SUMMARY:Mining Certifications: Why they are not enough
DESCRIPTION:Join PowerShift and FIAN for a webinar on the shortcomings of mining certification schemes. Inclusive Development International (IDI) will present their findings from observing the certification of a Guinean bauxite mine by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). Despite ASI’s goal of promoting environmental and social responsibility of mining companies\, they ignored violations of their standards including environmental destruction\, human rights abuses\, and the failure to consult local communities. This failure raises questions about the reliability of certification schemes\, especially when German and European supply chain laws increasingly rely on them to guarantee responsible sourcing. Why do such schemes overlook critical issues so often\, leading to false assurances of responsible ethical practices?
